Mrs. Jimmie Kolp, one of the first Texas women to earn a pilot's license. Her flying career which carried her all over the world began in 1929 when she was given an airplane and her own airport by her late husband, D.F. Kolp. She had become interested in aviation a year earlier when she spotted a plane overhead as she left an Electra, TX movie theatre. That afternoon she went for her first plane ride.
Mrs. Kolp was the first woman in Wichita County, the third in the state of Texas and the 39th in the nation to qualify for a pilot's license. She also was the first woman commissioned by the Civil Air Patrol in Texas during World War II.
She served on former President Lyndon Johnson's Federal Aviation Administration women's advisory committee on aviation, was president of the Texas Private Flier's Association and was a member of Sportsman Pilots and Silver Wings, only open to pilots having flown more than 25 years. She also participated in air races across the nation. Mrs. Kolp was a member of the Ninety-Nines, an international organization of licensed women pilots formed by the late Amelia Earhart in 1929. She was instrumental in the organization's successful efforts to establish a women aviator's museum at Will Rogers World Airport in Oklahoma City.
She was survived by her brother, Bruce Hudson of Glendale, Calif. at the time of her death in 1970.
