Took me 3 months, every weekend, to complete this. And the price reflects that.
Inspired by Japanese sake cups and Japanese modern design,
I didn’t cut typical oval/holes for handles; as I think that cheapens the look and makes it look like an ordinary
crate.
I prefer the monolith-like appearance, simple, minimal.
Since this doesn’t have handles, it is more of a display crate/box. But, is still relatively easy to move.
Inner width allows for more than enough room for oversized outer record-sleeves.
Douglas Fir wood.
Not the best wood; but, I liked this particular board because of its’ very linear grain, reminding me of tiger stripes.
Bottom is hardboard/HDF.
Chose this because I had a lot of material (the small water stain was there before dimensioning/assembly). The box never got wet!).
Also, HDF has a Janka hardness of 1700 and is much more stable, harder and durable than solid wood or even plywood.
Boards flattened & dimensioned with vintage hand-planes.
5-finger joints, hand-cut with Japanese saw and chisels.
Bottom grooves, hand-cut with vintage plough-plane.
Finish sanded to 400grit
Finished with paste wax.
You can always refinish it w/ 100% tung oil, shellac or other finish. I like the natural look and feel of paste wax though.
First couple pics show all blemishes (2 accidental bumps on edges from records), a wood-filler repair spot, a few small tear-out spots, small area w/ significant tear-out/chips on bottom groove (it’s on the bottom anyways), small water stain on HDF bottom. Also, all that white flakey stuff on bottom of HDF is just dried up paste-wax.
Not absolutely perfect; but, good enough to pass for a slightly-blemished, fine-woodworking item.
I’m not a master woodworker w/ 30-50 years of experience; but, I used the same techniques & principles.
I know this isn’t cheap. It is hand-made and took several days and countless hours to make. It also uses proper joinery with no nails nor screws used.
$260 Firm.
There are much cheaper 7” crates on eBay and Etsy:
Cardboard crate, $15
Plastic laminated cardboard, $20-35
Stapled/nailed together rustic-style wood crate, $35
A nice plywood crate on Etsy (still only nailed together though), $70
Approx. exterior box dimensions:
9.25” wide
13.25” long
5” tall
For any replies/people thinking this is crackhead pricing, lol...
Dovetail boxes of this size on Etsy or by other woodworkers sell for $300-600+.
https://mattestlea.com/ ...This guy sells his boxes for $900-1000+ and they sell out quick because he's well-known.
This is a hand-cut box; it's essentially similar to a dovetail box.
If you want to see overpricing, take a look at Heritage speakers made by Klipsch. $200-300 worth of drivers/components inside a mass-produced, machine-made plywood box (like Ikea) w/ pretty veneer sold for $x,xxx.
