condition: good

A rare 19th century gilt-decorated 8 pedal harp by J. F. Brown & Company, New York. The mixed wood frame is embellished with gilt moldings and brass fittings. It features a molded crown above a faceted column with Gothic arches. 44 strings, 8 pedals. The curved neck continues to a graduated sound box and the harp rises on a shaped, gilt base with pedals and carved paw feet. The neck plate is engraved "J.F. Brown & Co. New York 295 Broadway".
I think this address dates it to Approx. 1848-1856.
5' 7 1/2" tall, approx. 2' 10" long, approx. 2' wide from edges of pedals across.
Please see pictures for description!!!

Early American harps are very rare and valuable. Harps usually have seven pedals or less. This is a rare model that has an eighth pedal that opens and closes wood flaps at the sound holes. Only a handful of these 8 pedal harps survive from the mid 1800s. Many of the ones that did survive, have the pedal and flaps removed as fads and styles changed over the years. There is an effort for many collectors to restore these surviving modified 8 pedal harps back to their original configuration. This one has never had the eighth pedal or the flaps removed. This one is untouched (by me) and was used as a decorator.

There is another like this in the Metropolitan Museum of Art. use this link:*&offset=0&rpp=20&pos=1

Unrestored. Missing one string. Sound box developing cracks in wood from age.
A beautiful instrument that would be very valuable with some restoration.

Note: I have limited knowledge on harps and only had this as a decorative piece. I know it is rare. I know it is beautiful. I have provided the info that I do know. That is about it! Please ask questions or I can arrange for viewing of item upon request for any and all concerns. I am listing the price very low compared to other unrestored harps by Browne auctioned in the last 20 years. Comments are very welcome!!
