Rare-condition and beautiful 1968 Gretsch Viking electric guitar and case. This is a beauty, professionally restored by my team of California guitar techs and luthiers to be showroom, trade show, collector, one-of-a-kind eye (and ear) catching guitar wonderfulness.
Every inch of this guitar has been professionally restored over a four-year period, including complete binding, re-gold plating of the floating sound unit, new tuners, complete rejuvenation of the one-of-a-kind Viking mute system, meticulous professional repainting (I had this done in poly instead of nitro), Bigsby, custom wiring harnesses and Supertron pickups by TV Jones (including phase reverse), and a comfortable, very-custom-designed, padded back pad. New case of course, although I still have the original 1968 case and original backpad as well. The neck and ebony fretboard were so good from the start that, other than setup, they are just as in 68.
This is one Gretsch that is as fantastic to play as it is to look at. A few before/after pics attached so that you can see why this project became a labor of love for me.
For those familiar with upper-level Gretsch guitars, this one feels very much like the Country Gentlemen and/or double cutaway White Falcons (which I also own in my collection) when holding/playing. Primarily because of the Viking body size being the same form factor. Of course, unlike the CG, the sound holes are real on the Viking and the sound capabilities more varied.
There are some collectors who believe a rare Gretsch should be a fairly beat up relic to endlessly trade. I believe this 57-year old guitar deserved a new lease on life as a cherished guitar that will easily please a guitar-playing owner for at least the next 57 years.
