Solo practitioner in Orange County seeks a skilled and highly organized Paralegal or Legal Secretary /Assistant to provide support on cases involving contract fraud, wrongful foreclosure, and related litigation.
Document Drafting & Preparation: Assisting with the preparation, review, and editing of legal documents, including pleadings, motions, discovery requests, and settlement agreements. Ensuring documents conform to California Rules of Court (e.g., Rule 2.100 et seq. regarding form and format).
Filing & Service: Electronically filing documents with California Superior Courts (familiarity with e-filing systems required). Arranging for service of process.
Case Management: Maintaining case files, tracking deadlines, managing discovery, and organizing exhibits.
Legal Research: Conducting basic legal research using Westlaw, LexisNexis, or other legal research databases.
Client Communication: Communicating professionally with clients, court staff, and opposing counsel.
Billing and Time Management: using legal software to accurately track time for all work performed. Using proper billing language that can be used on client invoices. Assist in preperation of invoices, collecting payments, and arranging for payment to be made from clients.
Qualifications:
Paralegal Certificate from an ABA-approved program OR equivalent experience as a legal secretary or legal assistant.
Strong knowledge of California legal procedures and court rules.
Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook) and legal case management software.
Excellent organizational, communication (written and verbal), and time management skills.
Ability to work independently and meet deadlines.
Experience with e-filing in California courts.
Prior experience in civil litigation, particularly in contract law or real estate law, is highly desirable.
Familiarity with California's Unfair Competition Law (Bus. & Prof. Code §17200) is a plus, given the potential overlap with fraud claims.
Compensation & Benefits:
Starting rate: $20.00-$50.00 per hour. Paid as a 1099 independent contractor. Starting rate will commensurate with experience and qualifications.
Flexible hours: Contract based, average 10-20 hours per week.
Flexible work location: Remote work possible, with occasional in-person meetings as needed.
