Ravenala is a genus of flowering plants with a single species, Ravenala madagascariensis, commonly known as the traveler's tree, traveler's palm or East-West palm, from Madagascar. It is not a true palm but a member of a monocotyledonous flowering plant family, Strelitziaceae. The genus is closely related to the southern African genus Strelitzia (small bird of paradise, giant bird of paradise, narrow-leafed bird of paradise...). The large paddle-shaped leaves are borne on long branches, in a distinctive fan shape aligned in a single plane. The large white flowers are structurally similar to those of its relatives, the bird-of-paradis. These flowers, upon being pollinated, produce brilliant blue seeds. Very attractive tropical looking plant and can grown into a nice specimen.
