Viking character jug modeled by Max Henk and produced by Royal Doulton of Burslem, England, between 1959-1975. The Vikings were Scandinavian pirates and traders, renowned for their savage assaults to pillage and plunder. Excellent seafarers and fearless explorers, they ravaged Northern Europe between the 8th and 11th centuries, spreading terror wherever they went. The Vikings occupied much of England and eventually, King Knut of Denmark, took the English throne in 1016. Vikings continued to establish settlements in Ireland, Normandy, Finland, Poland, and Russia and reached Greenland and all the way to the shores of North America long before Columbus. Their well constructed long boats, often using dragon figureheads, were solid proof of their advanced comprehension of nautical engineering. The carved dragon prow of a Viking longboat forms the handle of this jug. The Viking character jug was made in three sizes with this being the largest. The small (D6502) and miniature (D6526) sizes were also produced.
