Alex De Andreis (born 1871 - died 1939) Portrait of a Cavalier (France, Belgium, United Kingdom) Signed and Dated Lower Right. Frame Measures 28 1/4" X 34 1/4".
A well-known and wonderful painting on wood of a Cavalier in a stately pose holding his cane.
Alex De Andreis painted a variety of Cavaliers and Musketeers throughout his career and painted this particular figure in many different poses for many years. This painting is signed and dated 1922 in the lower right corner. Has original frame with framer's logo still adhered to reverse.
I acquired this painting and a few others in a somewhat neglected state of condition that was likely the result of long storage or it was simply unattended/neglected for several decades. Painting and frame had a very thick coat of dirt/grime obscuring much of the detail of this beautiful painting. Corners of frame sustained gilding loss and some chips. I have carefully cleaned this painting and frame over the course of a few weeks. Cleaning revealed a few small areas of paint loss and a few touch-ups from decades ago. I made some slight restorations to the frame with some gold-leaf touch up paint (paint from the 1940s-50s that my grandfather used for clock gilding restoration) which greatly enhances this frames appearance without making major repairs. I have made no attempts to touch up the painting with the exception of a small dot of black at the edge of his hat and only cleaned and lightly coated the painting with a specialty paint wax applied to a cloth and carefully/gently rubbed/polished the surface bringing much of the colors back to life.
I would consider this painting to be in very good condition even with the few paint flaws, but viewers can determine for themselves. Colors are much more vivid than pictures show.
I have cleaned and restored a variety of paintings and frames over several decades, but keep it limited to the extent of my abilities.
I welcome any questions or comments from viewers and can arrange to meet in a safe public location for viewing and inspection.
Please view photos to better describe this wonderful portrait painting. I supplied a couple of pics taken during the cleaning process.
