Ultra rare Magic Book from 1938 that has been signed and/or contains names by 70 magicians, stage performers, Magician gild presidents, founders and many others that I can not determine their signatures or could not find them with my limited resources. Signatures/names are inscribed/signed on the first 6 pages with performers from the 1940's through the 1970's or 80's.
John Northern Hilliard, Greater Magic. Revised Edition. Fourth Impression. Copywrite 1938. 1006 pages. Hardback. One of the most famous books in magic. Hilliard has collected magic effects from the best performers in magic, and explained them in this volume. Truly a classic compendium of magic.
The book remains in very good condition despite all of the signatures and names written within over several decades. No dust jacket. This is truly one of the rarest varied collections of names/signatures relating to magic in a single book I have seen.
The Holy Grail of early magic.!
I have contacted a couple of auction companies that specialize in rare books and they expect an extreme interest from bidders simply from the vast amount of names and signatures from so many important early persons in the magic industry. The next well advertised auctions that will include historical magic related items are scheduled a few months from now, so I am offering this for sale locally until the deadlines to consign.
Signatures or inscribed names are as follows (my best attempt to decipher as I can not read through the handwriting of a few of the names/signatures). There are about 70 total:
Orlando J. Bagley, Estelian Macotela Mexico D.F., Fred Cotiller, Best Wishes, Jerry Laxson, M.D., Carole L. Moulthrop, Ben Shavy, Pig. I have done some research to determine who many are, but I could not figure out several of the names.
This is a one of a kind book with special interest to magic collectors and magic historians. There are several names that are important to the origins of The Magic Castle here in California and several Publications that were/are located here in California.
Serious buyers only. I do not ship. Viewings can be scheduled in safe public locations near the posted location.
I recommend consulting with an expert for any questions or concerns regarding authenticity of any potential signatures. Names and signatures subject to authentication. Some of the names may have been inscribed for temporary ownership claims/identification of this book. This book may have been passed around and owned by a variety of different individuals or families over the past 83 years.
I have 9 other Magic books available from this same time period (1930's-1940's) that are in very good to excellent condition, but these others do not contain any signatures. I have provided one additional picture of this book with the other 9 books. I can provide additional information to interested parties upon request.
