Of all the male R&B crooners, Teddy Pendergrass was the most dynamic and one of the most sincere and heartfelt. Listening to him sing is like listening to a sermon...heartfelt and received. Women loved Teddy because he was a man's man. People loved Teddy because they FELT Teddy. He was powerful and sensitive at the same time.
Teddy became the first R&B male act to achieve several platinum albums amid grammy nominations for "Close the Door". Teddy went solo in 1976 and was flying high, until a car accident in 1982 left him paralyzed from the waist down. In lesser hands that could've spelled the end of Teddy's singing career, but undaunted, he returned to the recording studio and made further hits with a slightly diminished tenacity, but still capable singing chops.
