Rare photo of Civil Rights activist Terrence James Roberts and family with President Bill Clinton at the Little Rock Nine Medal Ceremony November 9, 1999, at The White House.
This is a very rare official White House photo taken the day President William J. Clinton presented the Congressional Gold Medal to the members of The Little Rock Nine 11-9-1999. The Congressional Gold Medal is the highest honor that can be bestowed upon a civilian by the United States Government.
The Little Rock Nine were a group of nine Black students who enrolled at formerly all-white Central High School in Little Rock, Arkansas, in September 1957. Their attendance at the school was a test of Brown v. Board of Education, a landmark 1954 Supreme Court ruling that declared segregation in public schools unconstitutional. On September 4, 1957, the first day of classes at Central High, Governor Orval Faubus called in the Arkansas National Guard to block the Black students’ entry into the high school. Later that month, President Dwight D. Eisenhower sent in federal troops to escort the Little Rock Nine into the school. It drew national attention to the civil rights movement.
Nine students registered to be the first African Americans to attend Central High School. Minnijean Brown, Elizabeth Eckford, Ernest Green, Thelma Mothershed, Melba Patillo, Gloria Ray, Terrence Roberts, Jefferson Thomas and Carlotta Walls.
Terrence Roberts is pictured on the President's left side just behind with a blue shirt and glasses. I have not researched who all of the others are in the photo, but likely family and possibly other members/family of The Little Rock Nine. Stamped and dated with official White House mark. There is a personal inscription written on the back of the photo addressed to "Angie" signed by "Dad".
Framed behind glass and matted. Photo is in excellent condition. I do not think there have been any other copies of this photo offered for sale.
Photo image measures 8" x 5 1/2".
Fame measure 15" x 12".
A rare piece of American Civil Rights History.
