Long John Silver character jug modeled by Max Henk and produced by Royal Doulton of Burslem, England, between 1952-1998. Long John Silver was a character in the 1883 children's adventure story "Treasure Island" by Robert Louis Stevenson. The pirate was based on a close friend of the author, W. E. Henley, who had lost a foot yet did not allow this disability to dampen his spirits and zest for life. Long John Silver portrays an equal degree of enthusiasm and energy and, although a villain flying the Jolly Roger pirate flag, he possesses courage and ingenuity unlike the honest characters in the book. Set in the 18th century, the story relates how Silver leads a mutinous crew with a boy hero into a series of adventures in a search for buried treasure aboard his ship, the "Hispaniola". Captain Flint the parrot forms the handle of this jug. This is the large size and I believe this may be a unique color variation, but not quite sure. Viewers/bidders will need to view pictures to determine. A small size (D6386) and miniature size (D6512) were also produced.
