Estimate to be circa 1800-1899 German Westerwald Salt Glaze Pilgrim Wine Flask.
Absolutely stunning museum quality piece.
No damage and no repairs.
Deep bright blue color on greyish base.
Medieval Seal of Ulrich I, Count of Wirtenberg (Württemberg) Germany (1241-1265) to round middle.
The Wirtenberg coat of arms has 3 antlers within the shield with different variations over the centuries.
Probably made for, or in the region of Wirtenberg to celebrate/commemorate the nobility of the past.
This may even be an older piece than my estimate, but I am not familiar enough with the clay or glaze to determine the actual date it was made. These were popular and typically made in the area of Westerweld, Germany for a few hundred years, but reached their peak production and during the 1800's being sold in towns and cities on the back of oxen and horse carts.
Viewers to make their own determination on age.
This is the only salt glazed wine flask, pitcher or ewer that I have ever seen with this particular coat of arms and medieval seal ever offered for sale.
Truly amazing detail.
Superb condition.
Unmarked on the bottom which is typical for the older pieces (later pieces often show production numbers or design numbers at the bottom).
Height 11 1/2"
Width at widest 6"
Base diameter 3 3/4"
