Amazing painting by famous Revell artist Richard Kishady (1919-2011) of the theatre/opera production of Mozart's The Magic Flute.

Unframed.
Measures 24" x 36".
Very rare painting of the Opera or Ballet of The Magic Flute painted sometime in the 1960s, maybe 1970. Looks like Baritone Markus Werba appearing as Papageno? Not sure who the main focus character portraying Pamina or The Queen of the Night is in this painting (maybe some viewers can help). Papageno wears his pipes and carries his magic bells; both instruments are essential to the plot.
Painting shows the main character front and center, the flute player with parrot on shoulder, the orchestra at bottom, and the hooded characters at left.

About the artist:
Richard Kishady was an illustrator for Revell Model Kits, especially airplanes and automobiles. He was born in Hungary & fought in World War II with the Hungarian Air Corps and spent some time near the end of the war in a POW camp. After the war he traveled to Munich, Germany where he studied at the Academy of Fine Art in Munich and exhibited in Munich and Augsburg. He painted the walls of the school to help pay for his tuition. He immigrated to the United States under sponsorship of an American Church group. Kishady first found work painting brochures for the big three automakers but lured by the climate he moved to Southern California in 1951 and found work with the Revell Company painting the images used for hundreds of model kits. From 1960 he appeared at exhibitions with opera, ballet and theatre paintings (like this one), later with portraits.

About the stage production:
The original Magic Flute was an opera in two acts by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart to a German libretto by Emanuel Schikaneder. The work is in the form of a Singspiel, a popular form during the time it was written that included both singing and spoken dialogue. The work premiered on 30 September 1791 at Schikaneder's theatre, the Freihaus-Theater auf der Wieden in Vienna, just two months before the composer's premature death. Still a staple of the opera repertory, its popularity was reflected by two immediate sequels, Peter Winter's Das Labyrinth oder Der Kampf mit den Elementen. Der Zauberflöte zweyter Thmany theatre productions and a movie eil (1798) and a fragmentary libretto by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe titled The Magic Flute Part Two.
The plot was influenced by Schikaneder & Mozart's interest in Freemasonry and concerns the initiation of Prince Tamino. Enlisted by the Queen of the Night to rescue her daughter Pamina from the high priest Sarastro, Tamino comes to admire the high ideals of the latter and he and Pamina both join Sarastro's community, while the Queen and her allies are vanquished.
There have been many theatre productions and operas spanning a couple hundred years.

Paintings like this one are very rare and often sell for $2,000 -$4,000.
