"Temple of Forgiveness — Burning Man 2007" — an original panoramic artwork by Brennen Grey, created before his rise to prominence in the techno music scene. A rare early piece from the visual art practice of an artist better known today for his work behind the decks.
The piece is a sweeping panoramic photograph of the 2007 Burning Man Temple of Forgiveness rising out of the Black Rock Desert playa, mounted onto a distressed, hand-finished wood panel with weathered white edges. The horizontal format mirrors the vast openness of the playa itself — miles of desert, a crowd gathered in reverence, and the temple's open tower reaching toward the sky.
"This year's temple features four grand entrance halls that converge onto a central altar. Above the altar the open tower projects to the sky, letting the energy flow dynamically through the structure. As you approach, you see the central tower rising above the flanking entrance halls; at the top are long curving beams that reflect the arc of the sky. Clad with intricately cut and layered wood, the Temple is a vehicle for remembrances and blessings, promises and forgiveness."
Like all Burning Man temples, the Temple of Forgiveness was ceremonially burned at the end of the event — making any image of it a document of something that no longer exists.
