Oil on canvas of Leopold I, Holy Roman Emperor, King of Hungary, Croatia and Bohemia.
Leopold I was Holy Roman Emperor, King of Hungary, Croatia, and Bohemia. Born in 1640, the second son of Ferdinand III, Holy Roman Emperor, by his first wife, Maria Anna of Spain, Leopold became heir apparent in 1654 by the death of his elder brother Ferdinand IV. Elected in 1658, Leopold ruled the Holy Roman Empire until his death in 1705, becoming the longest-ruling Habsburg emperor (at 46 years and 9 months).
Large portrait painting attributed to Benjamin Block (1631-1690). Benjamin Block was a German - Hungarian Baroque painter who was knighted by Leopold I and painted many court subjects. His works have sold at many of the finest auction houses.
Large portrait measures 37 1/2" wide x 45" tall. Frames are 43 1/2" wide x 51 3/4" tall.
I believe this to be circa 1600s-1700s, although this may have been painted later in the style of Block. Definitely 1800s or earlier and antique. Please see pictures to help describe this painting. Buyers to make their own judgement.
Provenance: From a high end collector of arms and armor.
I also have a matching portrait of his third wife, Countess Palatine Eleonor Magdalane of Neuburg, Holy Roman Empress. See my other listing.
